The bidding at the Barrette Jackson was busy last night. Some beautiful muscle cars were selling in the $50s $70s and an old Corvette went for $80k. I didnt see any Panteras listed for sale, but the strong muscle car prices got me thinking about the selling price of our Panteras. Especially the ones that are in absolute pristine condition.

I think as a community of Pantera owners we sometimes sell ourselves short when it comes to promoting the value of our cars. We could do a lot more to support the value of our cars by sticking together as a group. When I meet car people that are interested in my Pantera the question always comes up, what would it cost to buy a Pantera? When I tell them an OK car will be in the $30k range, a well sorted out car will be in the $40k range and super nice car will be in the $50 range, they are always awestruck that they are available that cheaply.

On the other hand it must be the junker and abused Pantera syndrome, the ones in the under $25k range, that cause the perception with some bottom feeder buyers that think a decent Pantera should cost less than 20K. Buyers see the junkers and dont realize that it will take $15k to 30k or more to fix the car so to them its an OK Pantera. This perception is usually short lived, because after they get the car home and find out the body is corroded away and the suspension is falling off, they are not happy. Do you think it is possible that someday in the far off future in Pantera land all of the junkers will get restored to pristine condition and the junker syndrome will end, or do you think that for every junker that gets fixed there is some nut out there busily making a pristine Pantera into a junker?

I do have tremendous admiration for people that will buy one of the junkers (sometimes they do not know they have a junker) and work on it until it is a wonderful example of a Pantera. We have a Pantera owner in the Southeast that did an incredible restoration on a Pantera that was in really tough shape. No expense was spared, including custom made single slot campys. Im sure he must have way, way over $100k in the car but its got to be one of the best 1971 Panteras in the world. And its yellow to boot!

I think it would be a good idea when we see one of our fellow owners in the Pantera community selling a super example of Pantera for $100k+ or what ever, for us to support the concept. If we belittle the attempt we are only damaging ourselves as owners. You dont see the, muscle car guys or the Ferrari guys making fun of cars in the high end of the price range. They support it and benefit from their support!

If someone can sell a Pantera for $180K, I fully support them! Flame away!

I bought a "junker". I paid $17,000 for it. I thought it was a ok price. It looks good from the outside but as a owner and knowing what's under it I know why I bought it for that price. I have fully rebuilt the front and rear suspension, powdercoated and so on. The bottom of the car is the best so far. Next rust repair, motor, ZF..... I love my car. I could not aford the price for a done car up front but paying as I go was better for me. Michael

To me, my Pantera is priceless and I truly hope in my lifetime that Im fortunate enough that I will never need to find its worth in the market place. I know it sounds sappy but thats how it is!!!
Mike, since information on your Pantera is readily available to everyone via your website, all of us Pantera owners can use your car as a baseline to determine the price for our cars.

I know you have a value in mind for your car, so come on,...finish what you started and help us,...Pantera owners who languish in determining the true value of our cars.

So, based on what you perceive to be is the correct value of our Panteras, what do you think is the value of your Pantera?

Thank you for sharing and helping...from all of us.

Keith,

You are very welcome and I thank you for your support! As to the price, I dont think it would be in good form for me to do that, but the pricing information on this page has been generally agreed upon by people that are in the know on prices: http://www.panteraplace.com/page58.htm Ive updated the pricing on the page over the years that the Pantera Place has been on-line and have not received any negative feed back.

Thats not to say that somewhere, someplace, sometime there wont a perfect Pantera that is owned by some little old lady in Pasadena, California that can be had for $19K.
With all due respect guys, does it really matter what we perceive our cars are worth? Mike, personally I think your car is worth more than "low to mid-thirties", it's a proven show winner & you've done an excellent job documenting the improvements you've made to it. These cars are only worth what the market will bear, one thing that we can take solice in is that they don't DEPRECIATE. Is the C5 corvette a better car? In terms of handling & power, probably. In terms of beauty & rarity, not even close! Park the two next to each other & see which one gathers the crowd. In 10 years you'll be able to buy that C5 for the same price as a (by then) 40 yr. old Pantera. Says a lot for our P-car! Most Pantera owners I know didn't buy these cars as investments, but at least they won't lose any money if they absolutely have to sell.
Enjoy this gift you have in your garage, drive it, show it, work on it, PLAY with it. It's a rare & exotic plaything that never, ever gets old!

Ok now it's reality check time..We are not Ferrari people, Lamborghini people, or the elite society types we all think we are, the average Pantera owner is a guy in over his head when the (have to have it! no matter what) kicks in! let's go thru the check list!
1. Did you have to borrow money to buy the Pantera!
2. If you borrowed money to buy the Pantera did you drive it (as is) for awhile or did you have to Borrow more money to do the major improvements two week's after delivery?
3. Did you borrow against your Business to buy the Pantera?
4. Take out a second on your Home to buy the Pantera.
Sorry if i hit a nerve but the Reality here is that TOYS are the first to go when the going gets tough's and what i am seeing is a re cycling of cars and dumping of cars on the market that you do not see in Ferrari land because the Ferrari guy (for the most part) is multi tiered in their investments don't have their Car/Cars as part of their investment plan, have allot of back up and don't really care if they sell their car or not, can afford to keep it on the market longer, in general have allot more money and don't care if it sells! The pantera community has had allot of the (flash in the pan) types that have come in like a Lyon allot of noise and sparks and flames and than poof! sorry if you see it different, i may be wrong. or i may be the only one that is willing to hold up the mirror and say look!
my opinion is based only on my 12 plus years in this Pantera community, I personally don't ever care what other people say or do we are all different that what makes the world go around but what ever you do, Please Don't sacrifice your family, home or Business for Some car so you can keep up with the Neighbors or the Ferrari guy around the corner! may God bless us all, as he has blessed me..RoB
Hay Mike. Am I to ass-u-me that a Ferrari guy is a better person than I, or just has more money. Win did ones income set the price of his car? I got my PANTERA becuse I wanted one for years& years.I did not grow up wanting a lambo. So, when the money was right, I paid cash for one. I don't have to sale my car, nor do I want to. So by somone's logic, My Pantera is worth more than your's. IF YOU THINK YOURS IS WORTH MORE THAN MINE< I WILL RAISE MY PRICE!
It's realy a question of love and/or money. somone loves a pantera more than the money one cost so he is a pantera buyer. a seller on the other hand want's the money. But, He want's as much as he can get. So the real price is set not by the sellers, But by the buyer's-AND THE LOVE FOR THE PANTERA.

Interesting forum.

I have aquired my 72 pre-L from my dad who bought it in 1974 he paid $7,600 I will pay him $25,000 minus repairs est $15,000 and I am doing most of the work myself. This car will not be sold and was purchased as an investment in thrills!

What is it worth? Well it's worth a lifetime and I have waited 29 years to get this from him.

An interesting note, I believe that although Panteras may not be appreciating as fast as we might hope, many other interesting cars are depreciating. Examples would be Ferrari 308/328s, Testarossas, Porsche Turbos etc. At least it seems to me based on advertised prices I have observed. CB
