I have been looking for quite some time for a GT5S. I just stumbled across this site and am hopeful it will lead to the purchase of my dream car. I am not picky about color, year, etc. What I am looking for is a car that is around $50,000.00 USD. I am willing to import. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...
Paul

Paul, I don't want to burst your bubble, but P/WRX is right. There were only about 20 GT5-S cars originally imported into the US, although there are probably more now, plus several more look-a-likes. The last one sold at auction went for over $70K a year ago. You may have better luck finding an older car that has had a body update.

Too bad that you were not here six or so months back when Fred Terry decided to sell his car a gorgeous red GT5-S with some amazing engineering upgrades (turbos, EFI etc...)

Welcome and Good Luck!
There is a GT5-S currently for sale for EUR 59,900 and a 1989 for EUR 69.000, both in Germany. There is a 1990 currently for sale in the UK for £65,000

Other GT5-S Panteras in Europe have been advertised in Europe over the past year, but I am not sure if they have sold. Here are some examples

1989 RHD in the UK for £40,000
1989 RHD in the UK for £50,000
1989 RHD in the UK for £38,000
1985 RHD in the UK for £36,000
1991 Switzerland for 72,000 EUR

Of course, these are asking prices only.
Well, I am trying to set a budget. $50,000.00 USD isnt set in stone....The reason, importing the vehicle will probably add quite a bit, plus I am not looking for a show queen. I would like to find something that needs some TLC. I have some mods I would like to do to update the car myself. The Pantera has been on my list of cars to own for quite some time.

Finally, thank you for the replies. If anything comes across your path, please let me know.

My understanding (which could be wrong, of course) is that Stauffer imported GT5 Panteras, not GT5-Ss. As far as I know, the GT5-S cars that came into the US were all either Kirk Evans' Amerisports or "grey market" cars. John Scotti brought about 10 GT5s into Canada, and I know at least one of those has found its way into the US (#9191 just went to Seattle). Carol Shelby had five GT5-S Panteras brought in for himself, but that's another long and interesting story.

It would be nice to know from Kirk Evans exactly how many Amerisports he built and sold. Has anyone asked him this directly?

As far as George Stauffer goes, I have heard he sold maybe 40 GT5s but, again, it would be good to know directly from him. I would also love to know how many grey market GT5s came into the country (I know of at least one; #9317).

The bottom line is that there were less than 184 GT5-S Panteras built by DeTomaso between 1985 and 1990. Given the disproportionate numbers of the known remaining cars that are in Europe, I doubt very much if 100 of them were to be in the US.

EVERY GT5 or GT5S that came into the US was a grey market car. The dividing line between most of them was and is the legitimacy of their EPA-DOT conversion and if the car carries the appropriate documentation.

Whether an individual or stated business concern did the importing is of no significance. The fact is that Stauffer's and Evans cars were all grey market with a certain percentage carrying EPA-DOT certification (for what that was worth).

Stauffer cars were ALL grey market cars, on the other hand, Amerisport cars came into the USA thru Canada without the engine, zf trans. vens then purchased from Ford or other Ford sources 351c blocks and bare heads. He completely EPA-DOT every car sold. He became on record the Manufacturer. His cars are ALL complient in all states.
Evens/ Amerisport imported 20-22 GT5-S cars total, thats what make his cars so rare. The govermnent made him give all cars the USA 17 digit vin along with the DeTomaso factory vin.

GT5-S cars will comand upper 80K-and up, I guess it depends on the quality of the car and the deep pockets to buy one of these rare cars

Hey Kirk, have anything to add ?????

I've got an email from Kirk Evans saying it was around 50, but that he did not know the exact number. This email is from two or three years ago. He might have a more exact figure now.
