I yanked my water pump and the gasket was glued on with some blue stuff. I scraped both the aluminum water pump and the block. Does it need something else besides just putting the gasket on alone or should I use something else? And... the previous owner told me there was no thermostat but a restrictor? Should I leave it if the coling has been fine or pull it out and put in a 160, or 180? TIA

Do you have a Cleveland? If so, get a REAL Cleveland thermostat. Do your research because the clever "associates" at most national parts houses will hand you a Windsor thermostat. "Hey, it's a Ford 351, right...same thing." No, Cubby, NOT the same thing!
Lots of Panteras have the thermostat removed for "constant flow". Bad idea because of the way a Cleveland bypasses. You're way better off with the proper thermostat than with no thermostat at all.
I have a thermostat kit sold by Dennis Quella at Pantera Performance. Now I can't remember if it required removing a restrictor plate...adding a restrictor plate...or both, but I do remember it was a pain in the ass with the engine in the car. If your engine is hopped up, you may want to call him and ask about this kit. If your engine is mostly stock, a stock thermostat will work fine.
Later, Mooso.
