I just installed a new set of 48 Ida Webers. I have not begun to balance them because on initial startup I get a loud knocking sound. I cranked the motor with coil wire removed, no knocking. It does not sound like the knocking is coming from the motor but rather from one or more of the carbs. What might be the problem? I've had webers on the car for years, my old ones never did this.

the mystery is solved. One carb was stuck in a much more open position, by having snagged a wire with the idle speed screw tab near the distributor. That end is impossible to see.  I assume that this large imbalance caused wild suction noises, or one butterfly valve was fluttering hard. It's running real smooth now. I'm moving the idle speed screws to the opposite end of the front carbs.
