Only the early cars had lights in the switches. The bulbs are mini incandescents shining thru green windows in the switches. If your fingers are extremely small and you have a high tolerance for pain while lying on your back across the seats & under the dash, the existing bulb(s) can be changed. I tried it both ways on my '72, including pulling the dashboard for access. But the switch(es) won't go into the dash with the clip-on bulb/sockets in position, and getting the bulb assy up in there with the dash in place is an exercise in blind groping. I was eventually successful but chase everyone out of the garage before you start.... foul language alert!
I unboxed my wiring harness and located what I think are these two bulbs (as they look like the type 5 base)
the stamped numbers/letters on the base look like 12V2ENG.
I did find what appears to be a VDO exclusive bulb that looks to be the same with the discription of
"Type A 9/32" (7mm) Metal Base Bulb, 12V, 2W"

I was hoping to find LED replacments, but while searching, I didn't find any bases that had the tabs instead of pins for the bayonette

Update
the bulb should be a BW3898
which is an european mini bayonet base BA7s and a T2 1/4 bulb shape
