There's one on eBay right now and virtually on your doorstep, with a reasonable expectation on price.

Dennis is going to have to go though it and flip it for the GT40 application anyway.

Also maybe give Larry Stock at Pantera Parts connection in Carson City, NV a call. He had one that had been rebuilt, flipped for GT40 application and polished back along.

NOTE: the ZF has been sold. To who?

WHOA......

The rear is new to me, also. I don't doubt what you say about it being from a -1.

BUT, the auction shows a shifter housing data plate that shows the transaxle to be a -2.

So, something is not the norm here and I think that warrants concern about just what has been done, visually and internally, to this ZF.

Buyer beware.

Yes it's a Mangusta or -1 rear cover. When it's flipped for a GT40 the plug acts as fill/level port, fill until the oil drips out, alleviating not having to drain and then fill with the correct quantity of oil each time.

That rear cover also incorporates machining to oil the main shaft support bearings when the ZF is run inverted.
To my knowledge its not sold yet. I did the buy-now option, only to have the seller cancel the auction and renegotiate. We settled on a price, we just have not been able to complete the transaction. The best part is paypal is still processing my cash from the cancelled transaction. I am promised by paypal and my bank I will get it back, but its locked up for 3-9 days. I spoke to RBT, for not much more, I may just order a new one, unless the seller comes back around.

This is the first used one I have found. I would really like a -2 as I already have the quicktime bell housing for one.
Thanks
Dennis

Yes, the rest of it looks like a -2, certainly the bell housing. Also the flat spot at the end of the shift housing although the two little blips on it aren't normal. I tried to find a photo of the BMW M1 trans to see if that's what it is but couldn't find one. If you can get a new one from Butfoy for around the same price, that's what I'd do. At least it would have a warranty.

The M1 unit has a beefier/different bell housing flange, different shift mechanism, CV axles and is already in the GT40 orientation.
Dennis Quella just went through it, if he says it is ok, I think I am in pretty good shape Smiler

I am told it is in good shape, but will need some things down the road. While I hate to loose out on it, I am not going to pay stupid money for a used transaxle that still needs to be flipped, and at a minimum ring gear wired. Given the seller has not responded, I am guessing the deal went to someone else.

So the real -1 (not the 1.5 I have) had that rear cover. I decided to to a search for Mangusta ZF Transaxles I started looking through the search result images and the first decent one I saw was in a post by Mike Drew on the gt40s.com forum:
http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt4...draining-oil-zf.html
Which shows his (I think -2) trans fitted with a Mangusta rear cover. " Lloyd was good enough to swap my Pantera cover out for a Mangusta cover, which incorporates a fill plug." So apparently the parts are interchangeable. BTW Mike is in the process of building a GT40.
Dennis, Some (most?) of early Pre-L Panteras came with a modified -1 box. AFIK the only difference were the gear ratios. The biggest difference was 5th at .705 vs .86? for the -1 and .74 for the -2. The bell housing is the same as the -1.

It seems pretty clear that the one you are looking at is a -2 with the desirable -1 Mangusta rear cover that Mike Drew was able to get also.
