Hi Miles, It's a rotary unit from Hall done in 1999. I don't know if it is R12 or R134, but it works great. I have used the heater twice in 24 years, so I disconnected it. Can be easily reconnected. If there is any rust it would be small or hidden. I don't ever clean the car with water. I'm selling it because I hardly ever drive it. I'm lucky to put 500 miles a year on it. Not too many panteras to pal around with up here. Really nice, clean car and I'll miss it. Don
