What one should replace is the dryer cannister and the evaporator valve under the dash, especially if you're planning on using R-134a or whatever the freon-of-the-week is, politics-wise. The new valves have no filter-screen for more flow due to the worse heat-capacity of R-134a and everything else compared to R-12.
