AC hasn't been used in 15 years where to start?

Early 1972. Neither the AC nor the heater has been run in over a decade. Where do I start to test functionality besides attempting to flip the switches? The car has the heater shut-off valves installed. Also someone placed foam block inside the vents in the dash. How do you get the vents out so that I can remove the foam? She's a nice, but tired Pantera and I want to get her fully functional. Thanks in advance!
