Dave is correct. Once you get an expansion valve and carefully screw it into your evaporator (its extremely easy to crack the copper line protruding if you don't use two wrenches and mucho care), you may find a tiny conical filter stuck inside the smaller of the two valve ports. First, be sure it isn't full of junk. Then decide if you'll be running r-12 or R-134a freon. The filter is left out of R-134a installations, reportedly in order to allow slightly higher freon flows, improving the less efficient R-134a performance. You may decide you want to filter trash as before and add such anyway.
