UPDATE
replaced the alt, old one was fine at low speed but went bananas with revs above 2000.

new oil/filter

only needed about half tank to top up overflow and expansion tanks

on start up, had instant oil press
ran for 25 - 30 minutes in the garage at idle and revs, temp stayed at 170-180.

Me thinks all is well.
