When you look at the car, check the build date on the B pillar. The car may have been first sold and first registered in 72. It could also have been a car that was "set aside", and not finished until 72.

In California, the vehicle title went by the date sold. So, a 71 model that was sold in 72 would have been registered as a 72. Later, a second box, Year Model, was added. When this was done, the year from the "Date Sold" box was, by default, entered in that new box by the DMV. This is what happened with my 71. Build date is 5/71, date sold is 1/27/72, and the title/registration shows the Year Model as 72. I went to AAA one year ago and got the title changed to a 71.
