Ampere gauge bouncing around

My 74 pantera ampere gauge seems to fluctuate or should I say bounce while the car is running. It bounces from the positive side to the negative side. This happens either at idle or when I am driving the car. Is this normal? How can I check to see if I have a falty gauge?
