The BMW transmission was an upgrade only available on a few pre L Panteras. I clearly won the lottery with this one.  

It’s great to have even a little history on this car and the Craigslist ad was a big help. I wish they captured the price they were asking in 2005.

The BMW version of the ZF was developed by ZF and BMW in the late 1970's, for use in the BMW M1. The first M1 rolled off the production line in 1978. The BMW M1 ZF had several external modifications to the case, in order to strengthen/reinforce it. These reinforcements are very distinctive and obvious from a distance. As far as I know, the first Pantera's to use this version of the ZF were Si's. In looking at the engine compartment photo of 3239 in the registry, it does not have the BMW version of the ZF.
