Is the "switched ground" concept unique to Panteras, or is it a standard thing?

I have seen a lot if it in the my car - the Flashers / Turn Signals, Seat Belt Buzzer, Horn, etc.

I am just wondering if that is the "normal" or just a Lucas / DeTomaso configuration
