Ball joint / tie rod boot issue

Looking for some help with ball joint boots. I pulled the front ball joints and I am in the process of replacing the torn boots with new Energy Suspension boots. I'm using the part numbers that have been discussed on this forum many times. I'm having an issue with the retaining split rings. I can get them on, but they slide off the end of the boot and into the slot whenever the ball joint is moved, leaving the boot unattached from the joint. Has anyone had an issue like this? Are there any other ways of retaining the boots that works better? I tried with the ball joints on the car and off, is it more likely to stay on one way or another?

Second issue is getting the tie rods ends off to replace their boots. I have tried a pickle fork designed for a tie rod, but no luck. Any other ways to get these 40 year old tie rods off?
