The M-1 main gearcase is heavier and stronger due to the extra bracing, and the mainshaft & countershaft plus the bearings are all larger in OD. That's why we can't retrofit early gearing into the late box (or vice-versa) without machining. Never heard that the M-1 was weaker; here in the U.S, they are called 'super-ZF's. I think this is a Lloyd Butfoy question but probably not important unless maybe you are vintage racing.
