If I understand your question correctly, its the rotary AC switch right on the end of the console. The multifunction switch has an electrical connection to switch on the magnetic compressor clutch and the rear fan, and a Bourdon tube that inserts into the evaporator to detect icing. Late & early switches were different in the amount of Bourdon-tube they had sticking inside the AC housing but the electrical hookup was the same.
