I had a noise similar to what you're describing

I found the distributor gear did not have sufficient free play on the bottom side where it rides on the block ledge

I also found the drive gear on the cam severely worn

simple test would be to place a shim between the distributor housing & the block. if the situation is just barely in bind a .015" shim ~might~ do the trick?
