I don't think you can easily check by just popping off the cap, you'd need to also remove the advance mechanism from the top of the assembly. the rotor attaches to a piece that is separate from the shaft that sticks out the bottom

hopefully your noise is just a vibration, but your description of it getting louder with engine temp sounds very much like my experience. as engine temp increases the clearance becomes less, possibly into bind
