If you plan to go more North, then sure check out the US 101 (Redwood Hwy) - the "Avenue of the giants" being part of that road - and the parks along the road.

And stay out of downtown Oakland

Nope, I'm not Californian, but my father lived in the SF area for about 25 years (moved to NM now), and my brother still lives there - I thus know the area a little bit...
