I just went thru the same sort of problem on the wife's 65 Falcon Sprint.
It has a 600 Holley on it and was running so rich that it was puking black soot out the exhaust.
I removed the front bowl and found that the O-ring on the bowl inlet was cracked and brittle allowing gas to pass the valve into the bowl when the valve was closed. (The bowl was full all the time)
I replaced the O-ring and it is as good as new!
Best 5 cents I ever spent.
