Charged battery, dead electrical system

This is an odd one for me. I'm used to finding the battery dead when the electrics don't work, but the battery is fully charged. I drove the car to a Pantera meeting Thursday night and it ran fine. Today (Saturday) it's dead.

Symptoms:
1) Open the door, dome light doesn't come on. Nothing works.
2) Hook up the charger. Battery registers about 50%. Open door and dome light comes on. Try starting and starter clicks rapidly, but doesn't turn the engine over. After charging for an hour, battery still registers 50%.
3) Disconnect battery and reconnect charger, which now registers a full charge. Test battery on another car, starts right up.
4) Disconnect charger and reconnect the battery. When the positve cable touches the terminal, I hear an audible click from the engine bay, in the starter/voltage regultor area.

If the problem were a short, I'd expect the battery to be dead. It wasn't. But nothing electrical in the car works. Except when I attach the charger, so apparently 12 volts does nothing, but 14 does, although not enough to start the car.

And what's that darn click?
