Yes punching the pin out would be the perferred method if you can get to it. Otherwise disconnect at the spline near that pin area you may be able to mark both sides to line it up later

2. What are the "tabs"? It looks to me like they are the mounts at the rear of the ZF where the large bolt passes through. I guess if you bend them you can pull the ZF back with minimal engine tilt. Can you unbolt the bracket that connects to the mount at the ZF and NOT bend the tabs?

Yes the tabs need to be bent to remove. If you have bolts on the brackets that mount to the ZF you may be able to avoid bending the tabs on the car. However most have studs that are hard to remove with the bracket in place on the ZF
#6958 is a 74.
