cooling pipes

I had my original radiator re-cored and removed the connecting pipes to clean and repaint. I have found in the search mode that the upper connection hooks up to the left pipe which goes to the water pump. The pipes look the same except one has a small nipple on the radiator end. Is that the upper or lower pipe to the radiator? Also, the nipple had a hose about 12" long which is capped. Looking thru Georges diagrams I see the small hoses but don't recall a connection in the pipe. My car is a 1972 and only had the upper and lower main hoses connected to the radiator. Any ideas why? The gauge has always read in the 220-230 range when driving , but I have never had a IR digital reading above 200 at the cylinder heads , block , or radiator. Thanks
