Cover on bell housing site hole

When I bought my car there was a cover,(I think it was from Hall), on the site hole in the bell housing. While having some work done by a well know Pantera shop, I was told to remove it, that it needed to be open for breathing or cooling and not to melt the lubricant. What's the real story. Keeping the hole open detracts from the engine bay "look". My fly wheel ain't all that purty. Right now, I have put the cover back on but cut 4 holes in it to allow for some cooling air.
