I don't bash California. It's an interesting place and very important for the US and world economies, but as a point for objective discussion... it is huge, and has 2/3rds of the US's western coastline.

If you were to carve out a similar shaped piece of real estate along the East Coast of the United States, there is a really good chance you would have a pretty impressive economy that stands up well to international comparisons - and those areas, for the most part, are not governed similarly.

(and then imagine them under a central state government for the last 170 years with all of those House seats in Congress, electoral votes, etc...)
