Dampener Settings On Adjustable Shocks

I have adjustable shocks that also have a knob for dampener settings.

I have always had them on setting 5.

I would assume these adjustments are for how hard the shocks bounce when hitting a bump. 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest.

Correct ?
