I think the best thing to do is bypass the dimmer switch, I am sure it was only intended as a joke anyway.
You can replace all the bulbs with 6w halogen side light bulbs. I have done this on the sub dials on Jon Roots car and it did improve the brightness. Nothing like as good as taking the clock apart though but that is very difficult on the Goose because of the aluminium bezels. The bulbs I used are known as 433c or H6W or BAX9S or 64132 You have to file off one of the pins to get it to fit because they are offset, you only need one pin to hold it in there. It is necessary to drill or punch a hole in the clock body though to prevent condensation on the glass. You dont have to do this if you use LEDs but the light is cold.
