dead battery

I was wondering what is more common to go the battery or the alternater ,took the car out last night with the wife running great ,went to go out today. The battery was dead so I jumped started it ran great till I shut it off ,needed a jumped again .I did notice the radio went off when I was ideling at lights .tend to think it is the alternater ? I do not know how old they both our.
