Reply to "Decklid Strut mounting location/brackets"

There's a small u-bracket welded to the frt edge of each rear wheelwell. They sometimes break off and are inexpertly repaired by owners or shops. There apparently were two different brackets because if you flip the struts upside down on some cars, there's interference while others can be run upside-down with no problem. There are also two different sized bolts that were used, one assembly having a steel bushing. Reason we run struts upside-down is, water thrown up by the tires tends to collect on the top of the strut, and with OEM struts, the rubber boot was not tight to the rod so the water got underneath, rusted the strut-top and rod, destroying the seal. Finally, do NOT run too stiff a replacement strut: it is possible to bend the roof panel with too-stiff shock-struts (such as are 'recommended' for wings etc), and that area is extremely difficult to body-repair.
