Yea, it is OK to remove the canister, but DO NOT plug the line. That is a vapor vent that allows the fuel tank to breath.

I have deleted mine and just ran a short hose left and forward of the fuel tank so that any overflow that may occur from topping off the tank will spill away from the hot parts of the motor.
