Hmmm, I've not seen a ball end on the cable, but have seen something like a little nut or bolt in the hole in the middle of the lever.

Cable goes far from smooth, and the sleeve is in bad shape, so will need (want to) replace all. And for replacing the sleeve, I'll have to remove the entire lever I'm afraid - which doesn't seem to be a particularly straightforward job... Worst case scenario is that I need to go the same route as Lee, and make me a temporary solution until I one day come to the point where I take #1239 apart for a restoration (which is a future plan anyway).

Will take a second look once home again - am currently travelling for work.
