Most factory units will run the pump for a few seconds to charge the fuel system if you just turn the key to run. Otherwise it gets a signal through the computer that the engine is running. The pump will stay running through a signal from the CPU like forestg states or through the oil pressure switch. Aftermarket systems may use something a little different but work on the same idea.
