Electrical Gremlin

Strange electrical problem. My left tail light is not working (right side works). Per the factory wiring diagram this is fed by the red wire. There is no current at the socket. I have used a test light along the rear wiring harness and there is no current even before the split to each tail light. How can the right tail light work when it shows no current before the wires split?
