I had the same problem with my '71. Because you have to reach across and pull up the lever it becomes subtly bent, then the teeth do not hold. The lever is not made of the strongest metal. When the lever bends it spreads the part of the lever that surrounds the teeth. I took my lever off, straightened it, then welded a small strip of metal to each side of the base of the lever where it was bending. Problem solved and all repairs are covered by the rubber boot.
