Reply to "Exciting -------------- when the throttle hangs up !!"

If it were my car, the intake and carb would come off, but NOT be tossed. But, after mulling over the problem and the input here, I re-read the set up and took a fresh look at everything. That is when I started seeing where the issues were. Now that the carb is not trying to KILL ME, I'll tweak the fast idle (only a little, because it will be a fair weather car/toy and is happy idling at 750 when cold) and take one more shot at the mixture screws. Over the past two days I have driven the car about 100 miles in/around KC to find the it is driving better and better. Even the chassis is feeling more compliant !! One discovery was that I mucked up the wiring on the new cooling fans. Corrected that and now I can NOT get the engine over 165 degrees !!!! And it was 90 and humid yesterday. Even idling at 600 RPM for 10 minutes barely nudged the need. Bad news is that the rear main seal is not getting better - so I know what I am doing this fall !!! Got some R12, and now we will find out of the A/C will cool. The clutch engages and condensor fan work -- so MAYBE. No, he's not converting.
