R12 is by far the best. The issue is the cost at over $50 a pound and expect to completely refill it every May.
As far as the temp goes, there is nothing wrong with the Pantera system once you get into the L models. Every problem is for the pre-L cars.
The idea of the temp gauge is to put you in the right ball park. 165 might actually be 170 or so but the point is that the car is operating correctly.
