fan diodes

i'm in the process of installing HALLS mariah fans , and i'm not sure how to wire the diodes so current doesnt feed back into the system, one side of the diode has a nut on it , so i think this gets bolted to the chassis,and the other end just has a post with a small hole in it, the fans run in reverse , so the black wire is HOT, and the red wire is the GROUND, so which wire is going to diode, and does the diode get bolted to the chassis????.........THANX..........DAVE
