The F&F films are embarassingly unrealistic, they do crash valuable cars, they show ridiculous imports as being superior to muscle cars etc., and last but not least, they show the non-car enthusiast world, that we car enthusiasts are nearly brain dead.
They are fun. The first one came out at just the right time, and brought a lot of people into the car scene. Sure, they got into imports, but that is because they were affordable and stylish. At the time, I was into imports too (actually, I still am).
I have learned to let the stupid things go. I once watched a movie with a gun nut, and after listing to him talk during the whole movie about how people were drawing, holding, reloading and shooting "all wrong" I realized I didn't want to be "that guy".
The "car enthusiast" tent is pretty big, and the movies are made for the younger, generally more urban part of it. I hang with Nissan Z and GT-R guys a lot, and am often the only white guy in a group of young Asian, hispanic and black guys. A refreshing break from cruising with the Porsche, Ferrari and Lambo guys. My only frustration is that it can be difficult getting my two circles of friends together. They tend to dislike each other and I simply don't understand why. I wish I had a Supra or Skyline to park next to the Pantera and Porsche.
