Don't split the calipers until you get the pistons out.
Carefully apply air pressure and force the pistons out, maintaining symmetry. Once one of the pistons comes out, the air pressure technique doesn't work as good.
And if the calipers aren't split, the pistons can only hit each other.
You can put a piece (or pieces) of wood between the pistons to control extension.
