I read somewhere that American Mercury dealers almost systematically added them to "improve" cooling, which explains why many models before 1975 are equipped with them.
Someone who had the opportunity to talk to Tom Tjaarda about it assured me that from an aesthetic point of view he was against this modification, especially because the grilles are flat while the hood is curved in both planes.
After all, aesthetics is a personal point of view.
