Front spoiler lights, how is it done?

My car has a front spoiler with the holes in it. Does anyone know how lights are fitted and which ones to use. I've looked for old posts and found one but the issue of fitting them was not fully discussed. Due to the front valance behind the holes lights would not fit in straight without cutting the valance. Anyone done this?
