front wheel bearings

I just repacked my front wheel bearings in preparation for my Hall Super Stopper brakes. I noticed a lot have people have discussed drilling the spindles for cotter pins. Is this really necessary or just overkill? Has anybody actually heard of the bearing retaining nut backing out?
