Fuel Lines

I figured that I'd replace my fuel lines prior to the trip to Lime Rock this weekend. When I first looked back there, I thought that the lines were the "old fashioned" cloth covered line, but these are braided steel covered lines. I'm assuming that these are the original installation, but I'm not sure. Question - What is the original type fuel line used & is it OK to replace the line with modern rubber fuel line until I can order the original from one of our vendors. I can see the obvious benefit of a braided steel line, given the proximity to the exhaust manifold, so if it's safer, I just might leave the original line installed. What's your opinion?
