From what I was told, on the '71 and early 72 models, one part was in the gas tank (the sender I think ) and one part was outside the tank. When the sender in the tank failed, there is nothing you can do.
But, in the later cars the pickup/sender were one assembly outside the tank, so when it failed, just replace it.
It looks like both parts on my car failed (mine is an early '71)
If I could get a late model pickup/sender we could use that and just plug the bad part in the tank.
Confusing enough? It is for me!
