Yes, connect your fuel line to the fitting on the new sender.

The problem with the original design is the tube that ran to the bottom of the tank tended to rust from condensation, meaning when the fuel level fell below the rust hole the pump was sucking air, not gasoline.

I would just cap off the old fuel fitting.

I guarantee the charcoal canister is non-functional at this time.

you can do as I and others have done and just connect a fuel-rated rubber hose to the OEM vent and run it down along the side of the gas tank to exit at the bottom
