Fuel tank drain plug thread

Anyone know the thread on the gas tank drain plug? Appears to be approximately the diameter of 1/2 npt but finer thread. Perhaps a British standard tapered thread?

I'm in need of larger fuel line and a fuel return. I'd also like to install a manual shut off valve. There hasn't been any fuel in the tank for some time, no hint of fuel vapor, so I could probably safely drill and tap to the next standard pipe size in the absence of an adapter.

I suppose I could also replace the existing pick up at the top with an entirely new flanged assembly. What's the most practical way in for larger line? What say you high flowrate/GPH people?
