Reply to "Fuel tank plug"

Are you having trouble removing the plug Doug? Don't see that was part of your original post, but folks are answering the question you didn't ask anyway. So I'll chime in too...

To remove a gas tank plug frozen/rusted in place:
1. Soak plug threads thoroughly with lubricant. 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF is best, but you may be able to get by with WD-40. "Thoroughly" means overnight at minimum; better, soak for 2 nights, and keep reapplying lubricant solution so it may wick into the threads.
2. Use an impact wrench set on the lowest torque setting.

The hammering of the torque wrench will remove the plug in short order without damaging the tank's delicate sheet metal surrounding the plug bung.
