More than likely it's the sender unit. In any car that's used too little, rust forms in the gas tank and eats it from the inside out. You can short the leads and check for any needle movement or the glowing red warning light. If the sender is bad, you might also want to change the pickup tube before it becomes perforated. Look around for a used unit, since a new one is around $300!!!
